One of the most effective ways to enhance the quality of your final product is by mastering exposure techniques. A notable technique to consider is ETTR, which stands for Expose to the Right. This method can significantly improve the detail and dynamic range captured in your footage, making it an essential skill for filmmakers.

The Experiment

To illustrate this, I conducted a simple experiment using the Lumix S5IIX camera along with the V-Log picture profile and ISO 3200. The goal was to physically demonstrate how different exposure settings affect the noise and overall image quality.

ISO 3200 was chosen to make the noise floor more prominent. You should always use the base ISO of your camera.

In the first run, you’ll see the original exposed footage. Take a moment to assess which version resonates with you the most.

The second run dives deeper as I showcase the noise floor of each ETTR version. By balancing the shots to ETTR+4, you can clearly observe the noise levels that manifest in the footage. At this stage, consider which version stands out after the noise becomes visible.
